The most challenging part of this year’s Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2011 was the 150km of trail-less trekking in the wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. The trekking route was split into two sections. The teams had to fight their way through forests and bushes. The second sectioned was shortened by 114km after rain turned the forests into treacherous slippery obstacle courses, covered rock faces with endless waterfalls and, crucially, caused rivers to rise to the point where the course be...

This year’s race involved a total of 248km of mountain biking, 150km of trail-less trekking and 105km of river and sea kayaking in the wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. The 14 international teams had just 9 days to cover the distance. Only map and compass were allowed for navigation and only 6 teams managed to finish the race! This year’s route of the Wenger Patagonian Race 2011 lead the competitors through gigantic fjords as they moved along the edge of the third largest continental ice field in the world. This is a virgin and wild area that man has not yet been able to conquer, where no trace of civilization exists!

Strong winds also caused havoc in the second stage, a 47 kilometre kayaking leg down the Grey and Serrano rivers to the base of the massive Monte Balmaceda. Race organizers, Nomadas Outdoor Services were forced to delay the start of this section as a result of the high winds. In addition to making the conditions particularly challenging physically, the wind has also caused some equipment problems, including gear problems and a kayak rudder failure.

The start of the 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race proved tough but spectacular as extreme winds (100 km/h!!) blew competitors over on the opening bike section, whipped up the water in Rio Gray but helped to blow away the clouds and clear the Torres massif to create a picture postcard day in Torres del Paine National Park. The Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race is a true expedition, taking teams of four through lands previously unknown to the human eye. Racers receive minimal assistance as they traverse through the pristine southern Patagonia by means of trekking, climbing and related rope work, kayaking, mountain biking, and backcountry navigation.
