The Base

The Base explores the little-known world of rickshaw riders in London.
Hidden beneath the city's streets, the film dives head long into a mysterious, secret society of eccentric, fringe characters from as far-flung points on the globe as Poland, Bangladesh, Japan all bound together by a common destiny -- wherever they come from or are going, they find themselves today shedding blood sweat and tears at a socioeconomic crossroads -- a bizarre way-station at the margins of life in the modern city.

Director statement :
The base captured life inside the hidden world of London's mysterious and mercurial rickshaw riders. Cloistered in a tunnel beneath London's bustling business district, “the base,” as it is called, is both where London's exploding fleet of rickshaws are stored and repaired and also a kind of refuge/gathering point for a virtual United Nations of riders who buzz through London's touristed streets like “cowboys” in a world of mass transit. I wanted to convey to the viewers through a very cinematic and stylized way the pulse of this unique group of people. The mechanic of the place was my guide and so it is for the film. I wanted to show the unseen aspect of this job that spreads in cities through out Europe.
