Steven LoBue (USA) will be aiming to make it three wins in a row when the World Series returns to Sisikon, Switzerland for the first time in 8 years, after victories in Spain and Portugal put him on the cusp of becoming only the third man to achieve a World Series hat-trick after Brit Gary Hunt and Colombian legend Orlando Duque. Mexico’s Adriana Jimenez still leads the women, who will be making their debut in this location, ahead of record winner Rhiannan Iffland of Australia after two of five competitions. The 2018 season reaches its midway point in this historic venue, and despite hosting a stop in 2009 and 2010, it will be a completely new experience for the majority of the male and female athletes. Close to where once the nation was founded and where Wilhelm Tell, Switzerland’s greatest folk hero, defied tyranny, the world’s elite cliff divers will display their acrobatic skills as they leap from up to 27m on the Uri Stone into the fresh water of Lake Lucerne.
Hunt, Duque and Michal Navratil from the Czech Republic are the only athletes from the original line-up who come to Switzerland with the experience of two competitions in the tiny village of Sisikon. While Hunt is still not fully recovered from a mental twisting block and Duque comes nursing an injured finger and toe, it’s the 33-year-old Czech, who sits in second place overall after a strong start into the season with a 2nd place from Texas, who’ll try to edge out LoBue, the season’s dominator after three of seven men’s stops. The reigning champion, Jonathan Paredes from Mexico, has not yet found his winning form and will try to step up his game with a new dive in Switzerland in an attempt to make up ground in the overall standings from his current 5th position. The woman to watch out for is two-time champion Iffland, who returned to winning ways in record fashion in the Azores, Portugal, blowing her rivals away with the highest-ever total score in the women's competition and a perfect 10. Season-opener winner Jimenez still leads the overall standings, with Iffland now in 2nd and surprise wildcard Jessica Macaulay from Great Britain in a fantastic overall third after adding a 5th in the Azores archipelago two weeks ago to her stunning 2nd place in Texas. Cheese, chocolate and cliff diving – Sisikon in the Swiss Alps will host the fourth stop of a thrilling season and, surrounded by glaciers, a women’s World Series competition for the first time. Historically, the return to Lake Lucerne marks a rather significant stop of the 2018 World Series: Switzerland plays a major role in the history of the sport as Red Bull Cliff Diving as such was born in Brontallo (Ticino) in 1997 with the very first stand-alone event.
