Evolution of the sport - The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is in its fifth year in 2013 and the sport keeps progressing every year. Cliff diving is more dynamic than ever and the tricks from 27 metres get more and more complicated. The degree of difficulty increases steadily and this year several athletes break the magical 6.0 hurdles. They perform three somersaults and four twists, for example, or five somersaults in just 3 seconds – is this the limit?

In 2013 the title is decided during eight competitions between May and October. Until today we have seen three different winners in four competitions and it’s not always the most difficult dives that earn the highest scores from the judges. Consistency is what counts in a long season and now everybody can handle that and finish in the top every single time. Why is that? And what is more important – to show a new and more difficult dive or stick to your “tried and trusted” programme? Why do so...

Orlando Duque takes first season win during fifth stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2013. After the highest scoring required rounds ever in a World Series competition – two 10s for Artem Silchenko’s new flying inward one somersault pike, one 10 for the later winner and no score from the judges lower than a 7 – the result allowed Orlando Duque (690pts) to close the gap on World Series champion Gary Hunt (780pts) and Silchenko (700pts) in the fight for the overall crown.

The fourth stop of the World Series might bring about the beginning of a new era: for
the first time in the history of Red Bull Cliff Diving a female competition will be held.
Brave female cliff divers will fight for victory from 20m. The requirements for both male

and yet there are differences mainly in the physical constitution. And this means
differences in the height of the platform compared to the...

Fitness is an absolutely important part for cliff divers not to get injured. One competition after the other within seven days – that’s hard for a cliff diver’s body. What’s the perfect training for bones and muscles to deal with a challenge like this? Is it an advantage to be a rookie diver in a young body or does experience play a role as well?

Despite all of the their professionalism, which is typical for the attitude and demeanor of the ten official divers taking part in the 2013 season the final decision – to dive or not to dive – always remains the big question right up to the very last second. Fear plays a significant role in this highly thrilling game. Only the appropriate awareness of the danger can ensure the desired happy ending: a great and safe dive.
