The dedicated route team takes two years to plan where in South Africa's rugged Western Cape province riders will test themselves with a distance of around 800km and 15 000m climbing. What is guaranteed each year is a challenging traverse of the area's iconic fynbos valleys, majestic mountains, deep ravines, indigenous forests, spectacular coastlines and flourishing vineyards. The Grand Finale, started in Boschendal and finished at the Meerendal Wine Estate. After 86km of racing and 1200m of climbing through the untamed landscapes of the Western Cape, the riders finished the 2016 ABSA Cape Epic.

8 Days of Courage culminated at the Grand Finale of the 2016 Absa Cape Epic today! In the Men’s category Manual Fumic and Henrique Avancini took the final stage win with Karl Platt and Urs Huber winning overall. Yana Belomoina and Sabine Spitz enjoyed a Grand Finale win, but Ariane Kleinhans and Annika Langvad remained the overall leaders to take the Orange jersey.

After toiling in Tulbagh, riders have been enjoying the trail networks of Wellington and Stellenbosch.

Periklis Ilias and Tiago Ferreira notched up a thrilling debut Absa Cape Epic stage win on the trails of Stellenbosch today as Sabine Spitz and Yana Belomoina fired another shot across the bows of the women leaders.

German mountain-biking legend Sabine Spitz and her Ukranian partner Yana Belomoina were queens of Boschendal Wine Estate today when they won Stage 5 in a time of 4:51.06,5. just head of defending champions Annika Langvad and Ariane Kleinhans.

During Stage 5 of the 2016 Absa Cape Epic, the race moved from Wellington to Stellenbosch through some of the best scenery in the Western Cape...

See the news from Stage 4 of the 2016 Absa Cape Epic. Kristian Hynek had a day of bad luck resulting in him pulling out of the race. Samuele Porro and Damiano Ferraro took the overall stage win and Annika Langvad won the stage in the Women’s category with Ariane Kleinhans, but only by five seconds!

With a third stage win, this time the 104km Stage 3 from Tulbagh to Wellington, Platt and Huber have moved nine minutes ahead of their nearest rivals, another German-Swiss team in the shape of Centurion Vaude by Meerendal 2’s Matthias Pfrommer and Nicola Rohrbach. The 2016 Stage 3 win is also Platt’s 17th stage victory in 12 Absa Cape Epic’s.

Directly east of Tulbagh lies an old wagon trail over the Witzenberg mountain range which veterans of the 2010 and 2013 Absa Cape Epics will remember well. On Stage 2 of the 2016 Absa Cape Epic riders traverse it twice – going up the steep side with portage sections on the way into the Witzenberg Valley and then on the way back as they descend back into Tulbagh towards the finish.
