Surfing
from O'neill Europe
29 March 2011
A delayed start was forced on the competitors due to small conditions. But then spectators were treated to the most innovative surfing in New Zealand as the world’s elite surfers attacked the Gisborne waves on the 5th day of competition.
Honours were split between Australia and Brazil who each had three surfers progress through to the quarterfinals along with a surfer each from Spain and France.
The Australian’s applied the pressure early with calculated approaches, both Tom Whitaker and Adam...

Surfing
from O'neill Europe
25 March 2011
The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-star made a change in venue halfway through the day today. A move from the primary venue of Pines at Wainui Beach to Pipe at Midway Beach in the township of Gisborne saw extremely improved conditions that had the international contingent of surfers foaming at the mouth to hit the water for their heats.
After two and half days of strong onshore winds, Pipe offered up solid 1.5m plus waves and little-to-no wind with cra...

For the breathtaking three-second flights, covering at least 26.5 metres between take-off and water entry, extraordinary natural and demanding urban venues have been selected: kicking off in March in Rapa Nui (CHI), the World Series returns to Mexico (Yucatán) in April. The first competition on European soil takes place in Greece (Athens) in May, followed by France (La Rochelle) and Italy (Malcesine) in successive months. After a trip to the US (Boston) in August, the grand final is hosted in...

24 February 2011
The most challenging part of this year’s Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2011 was the 150km of trail-less trekking in the wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. The trekking route was split into two sections. The teams had to fight their way through forests and bushes. The second sectioned was shortened by 114km after rain turned the forests into treacherous slippery obstacle courses, covered rock faces with endless waterfalls and, crucially, caused rivers to rise to the point where the course be...

This year’s race involved a total of 248km of mountain biking, 150km of trail-less trekking and 105km of river and sea kayaking in the wilderness of Chilean Patagonia. The 14 international teams had just 9 days to cover the distance. Only map and compass were allowed for navigation and only 6 teams managed to finish the race!
The fastest team this year is British team adidasTERREX/Prunesco, winning the world’s last wild race for the THIRD consecutive time! They are followed by US team Gearju...

Strong winds also caused havoc in the second stage, a 47 kilometre kayaking leg down the Grey and Serrano rivers to the base of the massive Monte Balmaceda. Race organizers, Nomadas Outdoor Services were forced to delay the start of this section as a result of the high winds.
In addition to making the conditions particularly challenging physically, the wind has also caused some equipment problems, including gear problems and a kayak rudder failure.

15 February 2011
The start of the 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race proved tough but spectacular as extreme winds (100 km/h!!) blew competitors over on the opening bike section, whipped up the water in Rio Gray but helped to blow away the clouds and clear the Torres massif to create a picture postcard day in Torres del Paine National Park.
The teams soon spread apart along the 60km route as the leaders raced methodically, drafting to protect themselves from the wind. Others struggled and were forced to...

In a spectacular start under the crystal clear mountains of Torres del Paine, the 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race began with a wild ride for the racers as they tailed a herd of horses down the dirt track on the opening cycling leg of the event.
Cheered on by crowds of intrigued tourists in the Torres del Paine National Park, race director Stjepan Pavicic waved off the event as bright sunshine made the area look at its spectacular best - but the teams were bemoaning the sunshine as temp...

The Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race is a true expedition, taking teams of four through lands previously unknown to the human eye. Racers receive minimal assistance as they traverse through the pristine southern Patagonia by means of trekking, climbing and related rope work, kayaking, mountain biking, and backcountry navigation. They often cover hundreds of kilometres without seeing a soul.
From February 8th - 16th 2011, competitors from all over the world have to advance over plains, mounta...
